Bill Milkowski: Jaco: The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius
Well researched and moving profile by a jazz critic who was very close to the artist.
John Grisham: The Appeal
Guilty pleasure we both enthusiastically indulged in on the beach. Vintage Grisham.
Christopher Buckley: Supreme Courtship
What a great read - scathing and funny!
Michael Pollan: The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
Fascinating read about how our food gets from ground, or animal, to our plates (or McD's wrapper).
Eddie S. Glaude: In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America
Pamela Paul: Parenting, Inc.
In an effort to maintain some balance in a culture where pre-school costs $25,000 per year and it seems like everyone else's kid has cooler toys and better stuff, R picked up this book, which is thus far very interesting.
Elizabeth Pantley: The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night
Bradley G. Richardson: Daddy Smarts: A Guide for Rookie Fathers
If you happen to be an expecting soon-to-be dad, this is the *only* guide book for guys I would recommend. Unless you are either a Neanderthal or are willing to indulge random non-comedians' attempts at bathroom humor. That said, Richardson is actually very funny in this book, but humor is not his principal goal. For quality comedy on fatherhood, check out the Bill Cosby book "Fatherhood," which doesn't pretend to be a how-to guide.
